Wofford College, a private liberal arts college near the downtown historic district, was the recent recipient of a large art collection. In 2011 the family of the late South Carolina artist Julia Elizabeth Tolbert donated a collection of her paintings, drawings, prints, and ceramics to the college. Much of Tolberts work was produced in the 1940s and 1950s. The public will get its first glimpse of a portion of the new collection when an Exhibition of the Paintings and Drawings of Julia Elizabeth Tolbert opens at the Sandor Teszler Library Gallery on April 13. The exhibition will run through June 1. An exhibition of the works of Roxi Tolbert, great-niece of Julia, will run concurrently in Woffords Martha Cloud Chapman Gallery. Other cultural events this spring at Wofford College include the theatre department production of Silence, a play by Moira Buffini. The play deals with issues of identity, sexual freedom, marriage, religion, and war. Performance dates are April 19-21 and 25-29 at 8pm. The Wofford Theatre is located in the Campus Life Building. The Wofford Chamber Players and Concert Band will present a spring concert on May 7 at 7pm in Leonard Auditorium. Converse College is a private college for women in Spartanburg. As part of the Converse Conference on Southern Culture, the Petrie School of Music will present a special concert on April 13. Byna: Life Songs of a Woman of Cherokee Descent is a concert for soprano, piano, oboe, and cello. The performance is scheduled to begin at 7:30pm in the Daniel Recital Hall. The concert is free and open to the public. The Converse theatre department will present The Last Days at the Dixie Girl Caf from April 25-29 at the Hazel B. Abbott Theatre. The play is an offbeat comedy set in a small Georgia town. Ticket prices are $8 for adults and $4 for seniors. On April 27 Converse College will have a reading and book signing by award winning author Joyce Carol Oates. One of Americas most distinguished authors, Oates has written novels, short stories, poetry, and plays. This free event is scheduled for 3pm at Twitchell Auditorium, and the public is invited to attend. The University of South Carolina Upstate Shoestring Players will present A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum April 12-15 at 8pm. Theatre patrons will enjoy this fast paced comedy with music by Stephen Sondheim. The theatre is located in the Humanities and Performing Arts Building. USC Upstate mens and womens tennis teams have home matches scheduled on April 6 against Kennesaw State University and April 7 against Mercer University. Womens matches are played at 10am and mens matches at 2pm at the Upstate Tennis Complex. Both matches are against conference rivals. The USC Upstate baseball team will play Wofford College on April 18 at 6pm at Harley Park. There are home baseball games scheduled for April 20, 21, and 22 against conference rival Jacksonville University. Plenty is going on this spring at college campuses in Spartanburg. The community is fortunate to be able to choose from many outstanding events.
